Stupid oil change question
 

Doing my first oil change on my 2000 UC. The manual says the drain plug is on the left (sitting on the bike?) front. I have the bike on a jack, but I don't see it. I saw a grade 8 1/2 inch head bolt, but that holds the case together. Am I missing something.

That site is for Softails. The OP has an Ultra Classic. Pointman's post is the correct one for his bike.

Thanks fellas. That is on the left side but nowhere near the front.

If you plan on keeping the bike for any length of time and do your own maitenance, and it looks like you are doing that, buy the factory shop repair manual. The one for my Dyna is very descriptive and labels each drain plug very clearly.
It will be the best money you spend on your bike.

I have manuals for both of my bikes and find them very helpful. They are very well written, and for folks like me, have lots of pretty pictures to help.

I'll add my own stupid question. Shouldn't i drain the oil when the engine is cold? I thought the oil is thinner at low temps and acts thicker at high.

I own the manual. Paid something like $80 on ebay---factory HD. It just says drain plug is on the left front of the engine. No picture.

In answer to the other question, I have always been taught to change oil when the engine is hot as the oil drains better.

On the front left....
 

face of the 'pan' part of the motor. It faces forward. It's gotta be a good foot or so back from the 'front' of the engine, about mid-frame.
The tranny plug is on the left side facing down.

...but you know that now.
