Pike's Peak

What can we expect to find there around August 1st? I know we're not weather-guessers, just wondering about the ride up, traffic generally, road conditions, worth the detour, etc.?
Thanks~

Heh, just saw this post.

I can tell you this, a couple weekends ago, a buddy and I rode Pikes Peak and Mt. Evans, back to back.

Fast forward to yesterday, and a cold front brought temps in Colorado Springs down from 93-95 to about 85 for the high.

At 14,110', Pikes Peak was getting snowed, yesterday.

Now, that's not typical for this time of year, but it just goes to show, anything can happpen, weather-wise.

Oh, and it's either $10 or $12 bucks to get on the road, same price for bikes as it is cars. No National Park passes work, because it's a "toll road".

Go for it!!

We went there in 2004 and at that time the last few (8?) miles was unpavedbut I think I remember reading somewhere that it is now paved all the way to the top.
THe women stopped when the pavement stopped but me and my cousin's husband had to go to the top even though it started raining before we got there.

Colorado is a beautiful state and there are so many things to see but the things you must see (IMO) is Pikes's Peak, Mt Evans, Rocky Mt. Nat'l Park, the drive through Big Thompson Canyon and the Royal Gorge Bridge.

During August, Pikes Peak is a real tourist magnet and the crowds can be extreme. I have found that the best time to go up is early in the morning. You have a better chance of missing some of the crowds. Just remember that you are climbing 8,000 feet above Colorado Springs and the temps can drop a lot. Be ready for chilly temperatures.

Also, afternoon thunderstorms are very common in the mountains. So if you go early, you should be down before the storms start.

As another poster said, Mt. Evans is another great high mountain ride, even higher than Pike's Peak. There isn't much up at the top, but Mt. Goliath visitor center at about 12,000 feet is really good.

The road is now completely paved, lots of semi fresh asphalt. I was up 2 weeks ago....it was 90 in the springs 50 at the peak.

There has been heavy rain in the afternoons the last couple weeks (thank God).

I was up one day last august and there was hail the size of golfballs falling. Anything can happen up there...be ready and hydrate. The altitude will fvck you up if you're not use to it

If you go up early in the day you will get a much better shot of not hitting any major weather as you would later in the afternoon.

I still want to get out there and go to one of those hill climb races.
