Default Quick question on evo vs twin cam

Hey guys, what year did HD transition from the evo to twin cam? Is the smoother ride of the twin cam due strictly from the counterbalanced motor?

99 was the first year of the Twin Cam. They did add the balancers in the Softail line up..( the TC88'B' - B for balanced ) in an effort to eliminate some of the buzz the Evo Softail line had ( they were a solid mount engine ). The remaining Harley fleet of Twin Cams were rubber mounted.

The Evolution Dyna/FXR and Touring line up were rubber mounted and very smooth.

Yeh, the TC88A was not counter balanced. And the EVO engine started with rubber mounts in the early '80s, with the FLT, if I'm not mistaken. There is a distinct difference in vibration between the TC88A and TC88B, you actually have focused sight through the mirrors at idle on the soft tails!

1999 was the first year of the 88" twin cam engines, or "twinkies". The B motor was introduced in 2000.

Little confused? Not just the twin cam, but the "B" series and also the ones that are rubber mounted?

Yup, it's a good feeling lol! Gotta keep a good eye on battery connections with all that bouncing though.

OP: Seems you're a bit confused.
Here's the deal:
Harley put counter-balancers in the TwinCam Softail bikes starting in 2000. That motor is known as the TwinCam 'B'.
All other TwinCams are not counterbalanced.
And yes the ride of the Softail line is smoother because of the counter-balanced motor.

1999 saw the introduction of the Twin Cam engine in Dyna and Touring models.
2000 saw the introduction of the counter balanced Twin Cam engine in softails.

Thanks, I'm interested in a 99 Heritage that's advertised with the 88b motor, 1450cc. I haven't talked to the owner yet. But KBB and NADA show the Heritage models only as 1340cc. He must be wrong???
