Sheepskins vs gel pads

Sheepskins vs gel pads
Hey all,
Heading to Sturgis this year from southeast Minnesota. I ride the a 08 heritage and love the bike. This is a ride we are doing in one day. I like the look of the Australian sheepskins without the the gel pad. But then reading about the sheep skin with the gel pad, sounds very comfortable.
My question is: has anyone tried both and if so which do you prefer?

I have a Harco seat cover (sheep skin) and a gel pad insert that fits between the seat and the cover. Riding all day in comfort is normal. My friends don't let me lead on long rides anymore they have to stop and get off for a few minutes every hour and a half or so I don't.

I wouldn't trust a liquid gel pad. I had one in my shoe leak. Not good. But a rubber type gel pad, maybe. At least the sheepskin won't fall apart!

I have been put under the impression that for long touring riding, a firm but comfortable saddle is more desirable than a marshmallow soft couch. I ride very often year around with a sheepskin. Its cool in the summer (no hot leather seat) and warm in the winter (no cold *** leather seat). It gives me just enough additional padding on my C&C. I read somewhere that some saddle makers really dont push the gel.....

I have the combination pad, its a gel pad covered in sheepskin and it's a pretty firm pad. Took a trip to San Antonio,725 miles, only "had" to stop when I needed gas. P.S. Why do they call it sheepskin, its not really the "skin" off of a sheep??????

I have an all natural sheep skin for my seat. My seat has a gel insert. The gel is good for support, but gets hot in the summer. The sheepskin helps keep your butt cool. They both help, but in different ways. Sheepskin is a great thing for year round riding, cooler in summer and warmer in winter. I'm still not entirely sold on the whole gel idea...

Haven't tried the gel pads but I bought a sheepskin in 05. I have over 100k miles on it. Very comfortable but the sides in back are starting to fray a little. They do tend to smell when wet

Check out the IKEA stores. Some sell sheep skins (natural color), the one that I got was only about $20.00 (may be more now as it was a few years ago that I bought it) It will tuck in around my Ultra's seat and can be removed if it rains. (No all day wet butt) Great for long rides.
