Lots of popping from my 103 HO
My exhaust is popping a lot when I decelerate and/or rev to 2200 and less while sitting still. Sometimes it backfires on decel.
When they came and got it to do the clutch recall I told the driver about it and he made a note of it, a week or so before that I had the service manager at the dealership make a note of it, which he did. I went to get the bike back after they done the recall work and the guy read the repair invoice which says Tech checked calibration. Bike has most current calibration. Checked for exhaust leaks. None found. All clamps and nuts are tight. There is no way to adjust ECM for for any decel pop issues. This could be normal for this bike because at 1700-2000 rpm the injectors kick back on. Test rode and no problem found. Would any of you say its normal for it to pop and backfire? Has ayone else on the forum had the same problem? |
It doesn't sound normal to me but a face to face with the service foreman should address the problem. I've learned not to trust a third party to accurately convey my feelings and thoughts to the party that should be hearing it first hand. Nothing against the driver who picked your bike up but he has more on his mind than just your issues.

Pulling in the clutch lever fixes it 100% of the time.

I was thinking a bad oxygen sensor or loose sensor wire .
|
If it's a 14 and all stock NO that's not normal.
|
Mine done the same thing, on deceleration or quick rap on the throttle while sitting still, it wasnt real loud. More of a putting sound not a loud backfire. But did sound like crap. It only lasted about 400 miles as it went away after modifications. I figured it was a lean decel issue.

Why are you revving it to 2200 RPMs when sitting still? It will idle on it's own...
|
If its a completely stock bike it shouldn't do it. If you have aftermarket free flowing exhaust a lot of people including me have decel popping.

Thanks for your input guys. |
If the bike is bone stock, NO its not normal, if you slapped some slipons on that could be it. First thing I would consider is, maybe its some bad fuel.

Popping
I had a similar problem with my 2010 RGC 103 pop and miss fire really bad at cruising speeds, tacking at 2800-3000.Went round and round with dealer he wanted to charge me to have it dyno which I had done already.Comes to find out it was the O2 sensors.Try disconnecting them and see if it makes a difference. Good Luck

It doesn't matter if it's stock or not, if it's properly tuned then it shouldn't pop or backfire on decel during normal riding.

decel pop
Mine is an '08(96" TC) and it has popped on decel ever since I've had it. It has Rush slip on mufflers that were installed by the dealer before I took delivery. I have since had a stage 1 download and I put the S/E air cleaner on it...still pops on decel under 2500 rpm. 43,000 miles later, it still runs as good as ever. No mechanical issues at all. I say let it pop...it's just talking back to you.

some popping happens on bikes is not unusual. Stock pipes usually hides the sound so U don't hear it.
A little bit is not bad but excessive popping and some Ka-booms once in a while on decell is something I'd have check out better. Either a tuning issue or air leaks.. . |
Mine pops a little sometimes after changing the pipes, muffler and a stage 1. A dyno helped a lot. That's what got most of the popping out.

I had the same symptoms at low speeds and while running through the gears normally. It would cough then stall. While riding at above 50 mph every thing was better but it had a cough now and then. I pulled my seat and checked the battery cables and the ground to the frame. The ground was very lose at the battery. After tightening the battery bolts the cough went away. This will most likely be cheapest test you can make. And the result is fast if this is the issue. Good luck!!!!!!!

The techs at two different shops are telling me is normal. I asked why I dont hear any other unmodified bikes doing the same thing. One told me to run it around 3000 rpm because thats the range the engine was designed to run at. I rev it up a little (not rev the piss out of it) to sound cool and get embarrassed when it back fires.
No doubt they know what the problem is and don't want to fix it since they're sure Im going to put different a exhaust system on it anyway. Im about to put my foot down and tell them to fix the mother****er. When they do I'll buy new pipes. Ill be riding in the meantime. |
