$15,000 bike on a $150 Trailer

1 Attachment(s)
The $15,000 might be a stretch but,
I was running about 75mph on one of the worst roads in Louisiana when this passed me doing about 80mph. Every time they hit a bump in the road the whole trailer flexed with the bike. Those little tires were doing about 150 mph. I was waiting for it to all come apart and explode on impact. :icon_screwy:
I hope he made it to his destination.

When buying a trailer, the first thing I would need to know would be the tire size. I personally wouldn't buy ANYTHING with a smaller than 13" automobile tire, preferably 14". As far as weight goes, trailers have weight ratings with load capacities. Again, I wouldn't trailer with anything rated at least for 1-1/2 times my load capacity. As long as what you are carrying is secured properly, no worries.

"One of the worst roads"? When we went to Bossier City, we got beat to death by the interstate highway going there.

As for the trailer, good or bad road...that's a disaster waiting to happen.

Just stupid but to each his own. When looking at trailers it was about a $500 difference for real trailer tires.

Yeh, driver taking pictures is more of a hazard than the trailer.

The bike seems to be secured to trailer, the trailer is small but heavy duty. The road seem to be up to par. My safety concern would be with the the driver taking the picture.

I have a trailer similar to that. I have done some things to beef it up , it has grease serts on the wheel hubs but still has the 12 in tires, added some angle iron to a few spots , I would not pull my bike at 80 mph with it but 70 should be fine. I have seen seadoo boats trailers that use the same 12 in tires . I carry two extra spares always. So far I have never needed or used the trailer other than a test run around the loop.

Not necessarily taking up for SG_Jim, but how can you tell the road is "up to par"?

FroggyFatBoy 05-27-2014 07:57 PM

Booyah!! LOL!!
If the road was all that bad I'm surprised the OP didn't get bumped off his soapbox. :)

I've seen plenty of trailers like that rated for 1700 lbs. or so.

Sleeko 05-27-2014 08:17 PM

:icon_tinykitball: Was traveling behind an old jeep pulling a similar trailer filled with junk. He hit a bUmP and you guessed it - the wheel came off. Then the whole axle. No, not off the trailer, but said jeep. Talk about riding a bull!

porschedog 05-27-2014 08:23 PM

I've got a little trailer like that, but it's strictly a local roads, get stuff home from Home Depot deal. 80moh with a bike I like on it? Nope, not gonna happen. But to each their own , use what you have.

Bocefus 05-27-2014 08:31 PM

What kind of idiot drives 75mph on the worst road ini Louisiana?

upflying 05-27-2014 08:56 PM

You can haul a bike in a $150 car too.

My wife did, if fact she took about 15 of them with her I-Phone. She deleted all but the best one.

See above. She reached across me and started snapping pics

If you do the speed limit (70mph) you will get run over. Very few run under 75mph.

A lot of you guys are quick to jump on the band wagon.

LonestarXL 05-27-2014 09:08 PM

Those of you who think the trailer is fine, or you "use what you got", would you ride behind that trailer going 80mph on your bike?

razors edge 05-27-2014 09:45 PM

the proper term should be "who dat" going dare

I wouldn't ride behind it or a $5,000 trailer either, myself. I've seen too much crap go wrong.
