MSF Course Question?
#2
I already have a cy endorsement and am taking the MSF in order to be a more informed rider and to reduce insurance costs in Michigan. My instructor says you need to have 90% and have to provide essay answers to questions on the written portion in order to pass the class. I have CDL licenses and endorsements, federal vehicle licenses, and I have never heard of needing to provide essay answers to vehicle related questions. I feel like I could be wasting my time and money with this course. Can different locations have different requirements on passing the MSF course? Or is this determined by the state?
But then again maybe they will have true essay questions such as: why would you rather ride a motorcycle than drive a car? Or...

My question is are these requirements determined by the state, or by the dealer? He means 90% passing, while another local dealer says 80%. He really means essay answers to questions. Could this instructor really be bragging like he's been riding forever, but does not know state law?
Here's the thing, you are OVER THINKING this. The exam is almost word for word from the study book. If you get stuck, just use common sense. It's that simple. There were a few real novices in the class I took and no one scored below an 85. Don't freak yourself out - you'll be fine!

The state test part should be easy to find online, I had the class in Illinois and their is essey questions in the classroom portion with question and answers meant to spark a dialog concerning safe riding. Don't know if that is what you interpreted from the instructor .. don't sweat the class, its designed to be able to pass without knowing anything going into it.. pay attention and contribute and look for stuff to take away to help you. It will be worth the effert and could pay yourself back with your safety.

I took the MSF about 2 years ago, the test portion is multiple choice. You should be able to easily get upwards of 97%, it's really not difficult if you study the night before and remember all the initials like TCLOCS and SEE. There is plenty of discussion in class too.
Just a thought, bring snacks and drinks and even a packed lunch, there was no time to go get lunch. Change of shirt wouldn't be a bad idea in case of rain.

You probably meant that as a joke, but it's not. In such case, the instructor will give an oral test to the student.
