No I didn't jump to any conclusion. This happened just 30 miles from me. Local folks here that knew the driver said she was texting on FB. I just reported the link and that. One of the guys lived just 11 miles from my home.
That little fact wasn't in your first post nor the article. Don't get me wrong I'd like to pull every cell phone in a hand I see in a car but SAYING anything more about it isn't going to change a damn thing.
I see at least 6 people each day on my drive/ride to and from work and it pissess me off big time, because clearly this law is not policed in Kentucky.
They place no texting signs on billboards and electronic boards, but of course the texters don't see that.
Recently went over into to Maryland, and guess what, didn't see one person texting in the week that I was there - they have bold warning signs as you enter the state, and they must police this.
Texting While Driving Causes:
1. 1,600,000 accidents per year – National Safety Council
2. 330,000 injuries per year – Harvard Center for Risk Analysis Study
3. 11 teen deaths EVERY DAY – Ins. Institute for Hwy Safety Fatality Facts
4. Nearly 25% of ALL car accidents Texting While Driving Is:
1. About 6 times more likely to cause an accident than driving intoxicated
2. The same as driving after 4 beers – National Hwy Transportation Safety Admin.
3. The number one driving distraction reported by teen drivers
I don't know about that - I see people doing all manner of stupid crap while driving. Playing with the radio, putting on makeup, playing with kids. I had a friend get run into a ditch by an old man that was trying to put an address into a GPS. Elderly drivers have caused more accidents over the years than texting drivers. Why don't we rush to ban that? I wonder . . .
I'm not saying that text while driving won't sometimes cause accidents. But, we don't know if that was the cause here, and there are also other things that are just as dangerous.
It sounds like either you or someone very close to your heart texts all the time while driving? Texting while driving kills and not only the person who is doing it and we all know it. How about taking a moment to remember the fallen brothers and mourn the untimely demise that was caused by a person who should be behind bars and not steering wheel. Those two folks had a full life ahead of them which was taken by someone who decided to put their convenience ahead of others' safety.
Sorry if I came on strong but I don't understand you trying to find excuses to somehow discount texting whie driving.

Nope, I know I don't as a matter of routine (if I absolutely HAVE to get a text message out, my phone is linked to my phone via Bluetooth, and I have Voice texting capabilities. Very easy for me. But, I usually don't), and I'm usually concentrating on driving and listening to my music. My OL? Hell, she doesn't like texting if she's sitting in an empty room with nothing to do. My 18 year-old? She knows that if I find out she's been texting and driving, the police are the LAST thing she needs to worry about.
No - I'm not making excuses for anybody at all. All I'm saying is that there are already laws in place. They're called distracted driving laws. My problem is with old people that drive dangerously, truck drivers talking on the CB, people fooling around with kids and DVD players, businessmen fixing their ties while they drive, folks digging around for cigarettes in their purse. . . they're all just as dangerous. DO you know why they don't get as much attention? Because they affect the older crowd, too - not just the "kids".
My wife and I live on a busy street where our front porch is slightly elevated. We like to sit on the porch and it amazes me how many people I see drive by texting. If a police car would park next to our house they could pick them off like crazy but then again they don't care.
I believe that I read a news article stating that texting drivers were second only to DWI's in causing accidents.
Our 'No Texting While Driving' laws have no teeth. Virginia use to confiscate your police radar detector if you were caught using it on VA hwy's. Haven't been through VA lately might still be the law.
I know that a radar detector and a phone are two different things, but it could be a good deterrent for a growing problem.
I believe the "texting" function on phones should be auto disabled when the GPS function senses you are moving faster then 10 miles per hour. Ya it screws the passengers over, tough $hit...
Funny, thats exactly what I've been saying too. I would go further. No voice or text except for 911, and have it built into the phone itself, not a software that could be hacked.
These a-holes are more dangerous then drunks as far as I'm concerned. Way more of them on the road.
Had a young lady in a tiny honda civic on my rear fender going down the interstate recently. I moved over into the LEFT lane to let her pass and she was looking down at her smart phone the whole time. Even as she was only a few feet from the back of an 18 wheeler.
She was weaving in and out of traffic like a drunk. I see this kind of thing happening a lot lately and try to stay as far away as possible.

If the driver was texting or driving impaired in addition to driving on a suspended license, in the jurisdiction I come from she would be facing years and years (possibly decades) in prison, not to mention the potential civil lawsuits by members of the deceased families. My heart goes out to the families involved, may the memory of those killed in this crash be for a blessing.

I believe you should be forced to wear a "helmet" every time you're on a motorcycle, scooter, dirt bike, bicycle, or any open air vehicle where head trauma is a remote possibility from an open cabin or lack there of.
