1st time on site, which shop/repair manual is best
 

I own a 96' Springer Softail, it's been sitting awhile (20 months+) I am shame to say.

I want to get it on the road, now that I have time to bring it back to life.


Looking for a good shop manual (HD FSM or aftermarket ?)

Where do I find one ?

Has some good folks put together a list of steps for waking up a sleeping bike ?

I have just an HD Manual but best bet is if you can get both and HD and Clymer, things vary a little in each.

Get the genuine HD manual and don't flinch at the cost. It's worth it's weight in gold. Don't waste your money on anything else.

My t150 Clymer manual told me the left side axle nut on my '75 Triumph t150 had left hand threads.

It didn't.

Agreed. The chilton and haynes are too general, the HD manual is a lot more specific.

Me too. Factory Manual is the best. Check eBay.

This is one instance where it absolutely pays to go oem. Bu the factory manual...it is far superior to the others.

OEM Manual from dealer, 70 dolla no holla.

Waking a sleeping bike kind of depends on how you put it to sleep. you don't say where it was stored or what you did before ABANDONING that springer...
*I* would charge the battery and start it but I've been known to do shit like that. you might want to consider the following.

If you have a full tank of rancid gas, drain the tank and carb bowl. spray carb cleaner into the drain hole on the carb bowl while it's open and see what comes out. charge the battery and load test it. pull the plugs and squirt some 20-50 oil in the cylinders and roll it over by hand a couple of times. (two squirts from a hand oiler will do it, more is NOT better in this case.) If you're paraniod, crank it with the plugs out and grounded to get oil to the top end.

Check the tire pressure and add the appropriate amount of air.

Add fresh gas.

Fire it up. try to get it to idle. It's an EVO, don't start revving the piss out of it. Warm it up, ride it get it hot, change the oil and give it a once over.

On second thought, just drop it off at my house. I promise not to let it sit for 20 months!
