Default Engine Light - hesitation

Running a 2000 softail standard carbed (Mikuni 42), vance hines pipes running straight, 139K on the clock.....Up on all maint, oil, cam shoes etc....engine is stock and jugs have never been opened up The problem is at times the engine light will come on and I will feel a slight drop in power. Once the engine light goes off, the bike picks up that slight loss of power and runs fine. It usually only lasts 30-40 seconds and then goes off. Sometimes the issue won't happen for a month or so and then it comes back for weeks at a time (there is no pattern or specific time it happens). Fri-Sun last week I put 1400 miles......The problem didn't happen till after the first 150 miles, then it was back. The light stayed on for hours at a time then went back off. I noticed when the light was on that my mileage was horrible (I was running harder and faster than normal but 100 miles to a tank???) I have changed the ignition box, plugs, & wires. The engine is not throwing any codes at all when I check. Any suggestions as to where to start from here would be appreciated.......

Hmmm that's a wierd one I've not seen this type of problem before. I would take the dash off and inspect all the wires and grounds. Then remove the tank and do the same. As usual check batt. Connections a And test the charging sys. Out.

The only other thing I can think of is the map sensor on the intake manifold, but I'm not sure on that though.

The MAP sensor affects the timing and if it's reading incorrectly the timing can be waaay off, but I've seen them throw codes. If the Crank sensor is dropping in and out, it might not throw a code but you would expect it to just die.

If you are sure that you do not have a power supply problem, I would look at those two items.

I looked at the speed sensor and it had a good amount of metal shavings on it. I cleaned it, rode 130 miles and the engine light flickered once after 30 miles for 2 or 3 seconds and has since disappeared (never noticed a drop in power). My gas mileage is still horrible......Not sure where to start on this...........The carb has been untouched since it was installed when the bike had aound 20K on it.......(the crank sensor is clean and working)...

I'd clean out the carb, replace plugs and wires. Could be that you have leaking intake manifold gaskets as well. I just replaced mine and it made a big difference.
