Replaced shift shaft lever, starter clunks now...

03' Roadglide, approx. 40,0000 miles.

Replaced the shift shaft lever, everything went together smooth. The jackshaft went in easy, tightened down the small nut and bent the tab, then tightened the starter down. Go to start the bike and the starter makes clunk sound but does not turn the motor or even sound like it's spinning. Any thoughts or places to check before I tear it back apart?

Thanks in advance.

The starter should have been tightened flush to the inner primary before you assembled the jackshaft components. Your description states it was done last. You may have something in a bind.

If you mean the motor doesn't turn but the starter sounds like it's working, you probably reversed the coupler with the snap ring in it.

I think you would have to work to reverse a pinion (I never tried it) but I'll ask you if the snout of the pinion was was facing out as opposed to the teeth.
