5K service
Planning on doing the 5K service on my 16SG.
I know I need the Fluids and Oil Filter. I beleive I also need a clutch cover seal and should I replace the orings on the drain plugs? First time doing this and not wanting to pay HD $450 for it. |
I always replace the drain plug o-rings. Something that cheap, it's not worth skimping on. At the most they cost $1 at the dealer. I just bought a pack of 15 on ebay for $1.99.

If you don't have one yet, the most important thing you can get yourself is the factory service manual! It spells out what you need and how to do it, also what things to do at each service interval. You may also find the owners manual useful, but hopefully already have that.

The dealer sells a service kit for around 7 bucks. It includes your 3 O rings and a derby cover seal.
|
I have a FSM....just checking myself that's all.
|
FWIW, I haven't replaced an o-ring on the last 3 bikes I've had, don't worry about it.....

Did an online search for a 2017 service manual. Nothing came up anywhere. Can't even find it at the MOCO's website.

Back-n-Black: I would just have the o rings and seal on hand in case one of them looks bad, you don`t need to replace if they look ok. I just did the 1K service on my `16 Road King, reused the o rings and the derby cover seal. The o ring on the derby cover on my `89 Softail is over 20 years old...:D |
I wouldn't shell out the $450 You can do it all. It's a great time to inspect everything and the adjustments are easy to do. You may want the O-rings and gaskets on hand but most likely you wont need them.
