1978 xlh, help needed,
So, as some of you might have seen my other posts, about taking out the tranny. And working on it.
I still have it all apart. I have oil dripping coming out of the bearing left side. Where the primary, smaller gear, chain was on.
it's dripped about 3 qts, so far, since Saturday.
my question, do I need to replace this bearing, seal, ? I asume, this will drip into the primary once i put it back together and that's not a good thing. Or is it okay ?
how hard to replace ? What have to do ?
thanks

There is indeed an oil seal in there, so if oil is coming out that indicates the seal is in need of replacement. The engine oil is supplied from the oil bag, circulated around the engine and returned to the oil bag, none of it should escape on it's way round!
You can get a better idea of the parts involved by using an on-line parts website. If you don't have one, I strongly recommend you get a factory service manual. We also have a dedicated Sportster section, where you can meet fellow owners, even a dedicated Ironhead section. Both are well worth visiting.

Thank you, I put the front tooth sprocket back on, and leaked stopped. Which the end of that goes into that bearing some.
I do have the parts and service manual. I know top end was rebuild last year and can see fresh sealant, where cases were split.
I don't see a way to remove seal, bearing looks pressed in there, with shafts coming out.
no real way to remove.
but since the leak stopped, when I put the front sprocket primate on. I wonder will I be okay ?
and sorry, if it wasn't put in proper section. I seen this one for technical.
thanks

Ryan, you haven't posted in the wrong section, it's just that not many members come in here. More members will see your query if you post in those other areas, so you should get quicker and better replies. I'm not an ironhead owner, so can't give you a good reply, except that there should be a seal on that bearing, keeping the oil in.
