chrome or metal valve stems? how long do they last?

how many put on metal or chrome valve stems when mounting a tire?
(2012 Ultra Classic)

do these last a few years? or need regular replacement too?

if they last a few years, at what mileage do you replace them at?

doesn't have to be this exact one, but something like this.

Chrome Valve Stem

Thanks.

We always put new rubber ones in customer bikes when we change tires. As for the metal ones as long as they look good and are not leaking we don't change them, they last years...

Metal lasts a lot longer, but even their seals eventually dry and compress till they leak. If I didn't know how old they were, I'd replace them, too, just not that expensive to chance a leak after mounting a new tire - even though I do my own, that's still a lot of work, especially a rear. At least they don't risk risk a blowout like a rubber stem snapping off - I had that happen, fortunately while trying to put air in it in my garage. I'd just bought the used bike and hadn't put new tires on it yet. Did then...

I've had metal valve stems on my Springer for 12 years now. I think they will probably out last me.
