Default Vented or non-vented gas cap

I'm wanting to put a different gas cap cap on '07 Sportster and the gas cap that I really like comes in non-vented only. Does it matter if the cap is vented or non-vented for a 2007 fuel injected Sportster gas tank? I've heard some people say that it has to be vented and I've heard others say that it doesn't matter because the tank is vented.

I go by the rule:

1 cap tank = Vented
2 cap tank = 1 vented 1 non vented

The tank is vented, it vents via the overflow tube. No need for a vented fuel cap.

Thank you both! Nomadmax, is that just on bikes that are fuel injected?

Doesn't matter. Both tanks are vented. Below is a 2006 model, Item 9 is the overflow/vent hose that attaches to the tank. Without it, the bike won't run for long, fuel injected or carbed.

On this 2007 it's Item number 7.

You might find that non-vented cap has Left-handed threads...

If you leave the vapor valve (One-way valve) in place (#16 or #14), then you have to have a vented cap

Ok, so the non-vented gas cap should be fine to use on my bike?

You want a vented cap...It only vents one-way... Allows air "IN"

If you remove the vapor valve you may get away with a non-vented

Are you sure it's non-vented?...Have a link for the cap you're looking at?

Yeah it's a vented only gas cap. It's a crown style gas cap made by Detroit Choppers and I got in touch with them to see if they make a non-vented version, but unfortunately they don't.
