Default Ignition will not lock with key

I pulled my ignition out today to remove the tank to run some wiring. Got that all done quick enough. Went to install the ignition switch and popped right in place like it has a couple times before..heard the click. Moved to off, then on then Acc. No problems seemed fine. Flipped it to lock and the bars locked. Put the key back in and tried to lock the ignition and key will not turn it to lock ignition with bars locked? Pull key out and I can flip the ignition as normal to the other position? Anyone have any ideas? It's on my 17 rgs

Ok..Here is what I just found..If I put the key in turn the ignition all the way to acc. I can lock the switch there...Flip it back around to lock and you can not turn the key to lock..now the steering is locked but not the key..Now I have pulled the ignition now and I can lock and unlock with the key without any issue but when installed with the bars locked ignition will not lock. anyone have any idea's?

remove the switch and make sure all the notches are lined up.look down the hole you will see if there out of line.the fact that it locks in one position and not another tells me its out of alignment.you don't need the special tool for this a flat head screw drive works fine.

I will take a look..but if anything was out of alignment like you suggest the ignition wouldn't seat would it? The weird part is, it drops completely down into the cylinder, clicks in, moves fine to all 4 positions and works as it should. Just can not lock the lock in the lock position...did I explain it right? I believe it's in the lock itself..

Yes it drops in there, but if "any" of the internal cams are off...something won't work (e.g. lock/unlock). Pull it out, align & install...did the same w/my '09 FLHX and had to adjust. You'll get 'er.

this is why harley says use the special alignment tool.look at the lobes on the switch and then look down the hole.without the tool you may have to screw with it a little.i think we all have done this,so don't feel bad.

Ok..went out and looked and all the tumblers are aligned and are fine..I was able to mess that up go figure..but got it back to where it was before I started to mess with it..but I think I got it or at least found the issue. Ok you know when you push down on the key switch/ignition to lock it? The little button on the bottom ( the one you push up when removing the ignition) is hitting on the horseshoe trim piece that sits under the ignition ****. I pushed down on the trim piece pretty hard and sure enough lock w/o a problem. But don't get it? Why is it so hard to lock? Doesn't look like their is any way to adjust this piece down? Anyone?
