When a harley wet sumps, it's gonna run hot..

Oil breaks down sooner at higher temps. Keeping the oil temp around 185* will extend the life of the oil to provide better protection....

I would not let it idle more than 10 minutes...

I don't use an oil cooler but I do have Wards FCS fans. If my bike is running they're running. That said, the only time one of my bikes idle is stuck in traffic.

my Night Train TC88 was VERY lean at high rpm, and the oil tank dipstick said the oil was 280 on the highway

at bike week, at idle, it would boil the fuel out the carbs and die.

never seemed to hurt it, and it was WOT most of the time I had it

i don't worry about it.

unless the scavenge pump sucks, hard to wet sump at idle!
oil cooler is a good idea even if you do not really need one. if you buy the thermo-pellet type, is what it is. i run hard so i removed the by-pass. normal running 140>180*f run hard iffy 220*f winter 90>120*f.
my 1974 ch never had an oil filter nor cooler until a few years back. i converted an engine mount to oil filter plate and add a ford power steering pump oil cooler. machine had over 150k and now going on 175+k on the clock. i added them since i had a bird in hand and up'd the ponies and compression and running longer duration cams up to 7.5k. now the hd will wet sump then for sure. at high rpm, c/c pressure tend to equalize so less diff'l to move oil.

?

That would make me wonder what other STUPID things have been done to the bike.

I was going to use one but couldn't figure out how to hide the copper pipes..

Same here. I wouldn’t let my car idle for that long much less my air cooled motorcycle, with or without an oil cooler. I shut mine off waiting at a train crossing if it looks like I’ll be stuck there more than a few minutes. If a seller told me he deliberately let his HD idle for twenty minutes I’d be walking away from that deal.

Without a fan, you will get a small amount of natural convection just from the fact the your oil is exposed to more surface area that interfaces with outside air. Yes, it will radiate some heat, even without a fan. The oil cools the engine by spray the underside of the piston.

I live in N. Georgia. It gets very hot. I get stuck in creeping traffic quite often. To ease my fears, I installed Love Jugs. It does give me a good feeling to feel that air blowing across the jugs when sitting idle. They have a lot of videos on their site showing various conditions, including the fans running underwater. One test has the bike sit at idle for 24 hrs (i think) while monitoring oil temperature.

You might want to take a look.

My thoughts exactly...they only work....when you don't need them.
