This is confusing as I just saw a show where they sprayed vinegar onto bare metal to produce rust on the metal to have a rusted metal effect,, so what does vinegar do inside the take if it does that on bare metal?

well like was brought out, vinegar (sour wine) is mildly acidic. it makes a good metal prep for painting. it will also dull roofing tin. i remember one time offshore, i repaired a roof over a compressor skid and it was so blinding that the helicopter pilot was pitching a fit while trying to land on a nearby helipad so i had to spray it down with vinegar.
will it produce rust, well yep, it is largely water and if left on metal, it will oxidize it.

Metal Rescue. Why guess when there’s a simple product made for cleaning rust from fuel tanks that actual works? It’s inexpensive, reusable, and safe. There are a bunch of how to videos on youtube, too. Home Depot and Auto zone both carry it here in So Cal.

No need to use vinegar any more we do have state of art products out there i would do some good research before using any type of acids. Watch you tube videos there got to be better ways 805dwg got it right.

It depends how bad the rust is. my 94 fatboy was filled with rust. I tried the vinegar over night and it took a good bit out, pieces that were smaller. Repeated the process and i thought that i had gotten it all out from what i could tell. Ended up using acid and that cleared everything out in a few minutes. It ate the paint though because it was muric acid ( was planning to get paint anyway). But ended eating everything out and had a local shop coat the inside of the tank and then all was good.

I used electrolysis on a snowmobile tank a few years ago. Worked well. Google it.
