Why don't you just change the pads? That's like a $20 mod and they're good for another 30-50K miles.

This is an open ended question....It all depends on the bike and what you are looking for. Most people( myself Included) but not all Address the Cam chest issue on the 88Inch as soon as they can afford to. Some have been known to fail in as little as 9000 miles, some last till 80000 miles. There is no way to tell.
The other weakness in the cam chest is the inner cam bearings, These are also known to fail and should be replaced with better bearings.

In my case I changed out the cam chest at 14000 miles with the screaming eagle cam plate upgrade kit, Andrews cam, Better inner bearings New lifters and adjustable pushrods.

Since my bike is fuel injected I had to also get a tuner ( pre mapped from Fuel moto ), Total cost in parts was around $1200 and I had a harley tech do it on the side for me for around $300

Bike has run awesome ever since!!

Just do it yourself. Bite the bullet and buy the few specialty tools you’ll need like the cam bearing puller and oil pump alignment pins. There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube, and get a genuine HD service manual. If I can do it having never done it before you can too.

i did mine last summer.
new CYCO replacement shoes are about $30. supposed to wear longer than the OEM.
new gaskets for the top end are about $20 if i remember right.
I decided to change cams to the Andrews 21 since i was in there. $200
new inner bearings are like $10.
rent the bearing puller from advanced auto zone. took longer to rent the tool than to puller the bearing. free when you return it.
it can be done really cheaply and in an afternoon.
if not changing cams, $60 total bill.

Just wondering about cam chain tensioner on New Rushmore bikes. I have 2016 SGS with 35,000 miles on it. Is it something that I should be worried about and get it done ?
