I bought 2007 SPORTSTER XL883L in 2010.
It was very low milage as the guy bought it for his Dad, who decided he was not into riding. I was told it had just had its 1000K service. About 6 months after I got it It was hit by a car while parked and had minor repairs (Handlebars, levers, turn signals, etc. @ Bergan Harley in NJ), but nothing mechanical. I rode it on and off for a couple years but then (due to an insane divorce) it was locked up in storage for 3 years and I was only allowed to take it out to run it 3 times a year and never properly winterize it. Then things got worse and for the past 2 years it has been locked up where I could not access it at all, with no winterization other than a battery tender on it.

It currently still only has 4600 miles on it.
So the question is, what level of service would you recommend? I assume it's close enough to just do the 5000k service, but the question is, is that enough? If not what else should i have done? Should I be concerned about the gas and oil having gone bad while its been sitting, and so I wonder can it be ridden in or should I have it flat-bedded in for service?

5K service and yes, have it towed in to the shop.

 

That, along with new tires, flush the brake fluid if the 5K does not cover it. Might want to figure out who is not allowing you to ride it and do something about it. Man up as they say. Good luck!

 

And even with lots of tread left I wouldn't ride it with 2007 tires--that may have been made in 2006.

 

Was due to divorce issues. She knew having it was important so she targeted it. Long and annoying story, but did end with her regretting the false accusations and losing Big time. I got everything I asked for, and court awarded me the house free and clear including making her pay the refinancing fees to put the house in my name.
So it was a Judge stopping me from riding it. Maning up vs. a judge can end with you being someones girlfriend in jail. Sooo. no.. but thanks.

 

Did I get this right? You're a male and you came out of a divorce court with a shirt still on your back? I'm going to lay down in a darkened room with a wet towel over my head.

 

Are you going to do the servicing yourself? I would do the most extensive servicing and replace ALL fluids. Replace tries as suggested also. Visually inspect the clutch plates and brake pads. If it can be lubed, lube it. Replace not clean air filter. While you have pieces off, check as many electrical connections for security as you can get to. For grounds especially, loosen, wiggle the connection and retighten. Probably new battery will be needed. If you are paying someone to do this it could get expensive to do it right.
