Was considering/wanting to do an Iron but 1000 mile in 24 hours in Indiana or vicinity....

Anybody wanna plan one for Spring/Summer 2019?

I did the Indy->Champaign->Memphis->Nashville->Indy route for my SS1000 in 2010. Did it on a sport bike. I'm actually thinking about doing one of the Great Lakes 1000 rides. Straight up through MI, and then down through WI and IL. I think the Route was 1130 miles. Best part is that I can get a stop in at HD in Milwaukee. Certainly won't be a long stop. The 1000 in 24 isn't easy. 20 hours on the road isn't what I would call fun and you need a 50mph average speed to do it in 20. When you stop for fuel, food, and rest, that forces your actual rolling speed up a bit. Essentially, you need to maintain interstate speeds every chance you get. That would make rolling on state highways and the 100 miles near Chicago a gamble. I'm trying to talk a couple friends into it, but one isn't really interested in that kind of punishment, and the other doesn't think his bike is up for it. If you're hell bent on getting an IronButt challenge under your belt and need a wingman just so you don't do it alone, I'd be willing if my schedule allows.

 

I've not done a 1000 mile ride before. Last fall I took off from east of Columbus, Ohio area after work and rode 350 miles +/- to Bowling Green, KY. The next morning, I did 500 + miles to Mobile, AL. From there, rode to Panama City, FLA for family vacation (and was subsequently run out by the hurricane). Repeat mileage back to Ohio.

Can't say I was tapped-out from riding that much and never really got uncomfortable doing it. I rode a couple stretches with full tank to empty (about 260 miles +/-) and what not. No prob.

I'm a newer rider: Bought my first mc three years ago now (new '15 Softtail Slim) before trading it in the fall of '17 for a '17 Road King. I had about 12k miles on the Slim at trade in. I've about 10k on my Road King now.

I'd love to do something like this! My schedule is somewhat flexible, especially more towards summer months.

When I did it, I left home at 3am and got home just before Midnight. Stopped South of Champaign to eat breakfast and warm up (10th of October). Stopped for about an hour in Nashville to let the rush hour traffic dissipate and stretch. About a 2 hour stop in Memphis for lunch. Didn't stop to eat dinner. My shoulders hurt for about a week, and my forehead was bruised from the wind pressure on my helmet. It's not an easy thing to do. When we were on the interstates, we ran 75-85 the entire time.
