Default Pulley for you Pulley for me.....

Doing a front pulley swap on my 14 SGS to help out with the sidecar. 6th gear is all but useless at the moment and the bike is sluggish on takeoff. So.....

going to a 30t on front but undecided about the rear. I have a 70t sitting on the shelf which would help keep the revs down on top end. But the 68t would make starting off waaaay easy. Like smoke the tires easy I think Nothing wrong with that but I am interested in hearing other opinions.

One thing is that with the 30/68 I would be at the far limit of belt adjustment and the 30/70 would put me at the other extreme. As for gas mileage, I'm only getting about 20mpg right now. A little more or less wth.

Waddya think folks? 30/68 or 30/70?

Don't know if this will help, but I made the change from 32 to 31 on the trans of my 2000 Road Glide with Hannigan sidecar, and it made a noticeable improvement in acceleration. Not a huge amount, but it helped pulling the hack up hills without having to downshift as much. I could use the stock belt with that setup. It raised my cruising RPM just enough that if I rolled the throttle on at 60 in 5th I was right at the point my cams were starting to make good power.

But, the 2000 was a 5-speed geared lower than your '14 to start with, so to get the same improvement, you might need to go with a 30 tooth. Then you run into the belt length issues. If it was me, I'd start with the 30/70 combination. If that doesn't work for ya, swapping rear sprockets is easy enough.

Subscribed, I hope you get some helpful answers to the question, since I expect to be adding a hack to my '16 Road Glide next year, and may very well consider a gearing change too.

Good looking sidecar, by the way.

thanks hawg. I'm trying to avoid doing this twice. Going with the 30/70 would mean I keep my current belt. The 30/68 would likely mean a belt change. Would like to avoid that if possible:-)
