Default I'm converting mine to a trike

Let me start out by saying I'm 82 years old. Very healthy for my age but with sore knees and weaker muscles I don't feel as safe or secure on a 2 wheeler as I once did.

A number of years ago I got a 2008 105th anniversary 1200 Sportster that I found easier to handle than my bigger bikes. Now my legs are not as strong and I get worried just sitting at a stoplight that a knee might give out and I dump the bike. It almost happened a couple of times already. I really love my bike but I seriously considered giving it up and selling it.

Several weeks ago my wife and I were camping at an RV Park. The next day a large group of RV's pulled in and they were all towing trailers with trikes on board. They were having a rally for 3 wheelers and had every kind of trike made. Some were factory and many were conversions from kits. I looked at my wife and said "That's what I need!"

Anyhow, to get to the point, I did a lot of research and today I ordered a Frankenstein conversion kit for my Sportster. I got the complete package, the kit, new Vance and Hines short exhaust (stock is too long and would hit the rear assembly) and 4 degree rake triple trees for better steering. I'm pretty excited because I'll be able to ride again with less concern other than distracted drivers.

I love doing my own work and the kit looks like a pretty easy install. The complete kit, including everything I mentioned and shipped to my door was $6065. Not cheap but from all I've read, a quality kit and far less than buying a complete trike from a dealer. I also get to keep my own bike with very low miles.

I'll try to take pictures and post them here along with comments on any problems I encounter. Wish me luck!

Best of luck on your build! It's great that you'll be able to still ride your bike.

Good luck and the wrenching is almost as fun as riding at times. Post pictures if you get time.

Good luck! Awesome that you're staying on your bike. Looking forward to see this build.

You will not regret your choice; Frankenstein is absolutely a tier 1 conversion kit...

Hey Dieselnerd,

Great choice, you will be very happy with the Frankenstein kit. I have around 8,000 miles on the kit and still love riding it the same as day 1. BTW, Vance and Hines make quiet baffles for those shorties. I have them in mine and it is still loud but a little deeper sound, not as blatty. Can't wait to see pictures.

I was on the fence when thinking about converting my softail custom. Best thing I ever did, should have done this years ago. For me every ride is just like the first ride was. I can't get the smile off my face. Just need to remember not to put your feet down. And when stopping be prepared to answer some questions about your trike
