I'm looking at a similar issue as my wife and I are getting older.

For me do we get a side car (which I think looks cool ) or get a trike?

There is a sub-forum here about sidecars, etc that will give you lots of info, https://www.hdforums.com/forum/hacke...railering-100/ and https://sidecar.com/sidecar/sidecars!/ for lots more info on sidecars.

We got a Hannigan http://www.hannigantrikes.com/product-type/sidecars/ sidecar for my wife's bike when she wanted to take our dogs on trips. A few years later, due to knee, ankle and other issues, (I'm 71) I got one for my bike too. We are very happy with the quality of our Hannigan's, but there are several other good brands out there, Champion, DMC,

Riding a bike with a sidecar is a lot different than on two wheels, handling is different, you steer instead of lean for turns, Braking and acceleration will affect handling differently than on two wheels.
There is a learning curve to riding a sidecar, but once you get it, they are a blast to ride. And sidecars are cooler than trikes. Good luck!

Brand big question. Where you live may play a part. Cost, how far do you want to go with this . Hannigan makes a quality car and does great mounting work. Not cheap but done right. DMC is an out standing place to shop and do business but on the wrong side of the US.
Liberty and some of the others price good cars but may be very slow getting you finished. Sometimes the most cost effective way is buy a rig already done. They don't come up everyday but you can often save a lot.
The first thing you need to figure out is type of car you need. Medical issue can mean a lot. You may need a car that is easy to get in and out of . Low with flip up top. Or one with a side door and steps. How much hip room will you need.
Sidecars are amazing, they are not for everyone. But if you can adapt and roll with it, dam they are fun. I will be happy to help anyway I can.
I currently have two of them, different as day and night.
Hannigan twin Classic . Flip top. Heading to TN and deals Gap with it in 11 days.

08 has extremely tall gearing to pull a side car. imo the ride would be more enoyable with either a pulley or primary gear swap.

No it does not. That is just another myth. gearing will do just fine as is. 07 was the first standard 6 Speed and it was gear slight higher but they reduced that with the 08..
many said the same thing about the 750 Street rig I have. It is false pulls it in 6th just fine .

07-08 rear pulley 66 tooth, 09 68 tooth. that gearing made riding 2 up a chore cant imagine it pulling a hack. harley lowered the gearing even more on the triglide with a with a smaller front pulley. and even then its geared tall for fuel milage and epa.

1996 Fatboy 5 speed engine factory tugged a sidecar a fair amount of miles with no gearing changes. Sidecar is off it now it still runs just fine. You have to be real careful about what they say. And compare it to what is being done. Oh and they say my 2017 M8 will not Tugged the twin classic either. Again they are so wrong.
