I have a 2011 Ultra Classic. Which would you do, trike my ultra or trade for a new tri glide?
Depends...If you've got 35 G's to throw down, and you don't mind taking a loss on trade in, it's always better to go with the factory set-up. The work is already done. But you will probably come out money ahead doing it yourself considering what your trade in value will be. The dealer will low ball you. I don't know what the situation with your bike is (paid cash vs financed) If it is financed, you are probably still upside down. (trade in loss + upside down = loss).
Find out what your loss will be, and the cost of the trike kit and what is the balance?
Then you have the satisfaction value. Doing the job yourself, which to me is more important. Have fun.
Go to dealer and get a quote. If you go aftermarket you will lose your Hd warranty,my TG is 2year everything. Some aftermarket kits are better than HD's.If you convert expect an issue or two.Either way your going to like the trike.
You can expect issues with either a conversion or a HD Trike. I believe the major difference is the HD Trike has a frame that is designed for a trike where as the conversion will not.
A good conversion will likely cost you $15K and you won't have the electric reverse. You need to compare final cost of trading in your bike for a new HD trike versus having a kit done. Also, would your diy trike have the same resale as a factory HD trike?
I have a 2007 ultra and had it triked with a Roadsamith conversion Total cost $14,000.00
with electric reverse. it is 10 inches longer than original. Has a great ride, pick a good installer. Roadsmith will sell it to you if you wont to do the work your self. I am pleased with mine.
I had the wife's '01 Fatboy converted 5-6 years ago with a DFT smoothie kit, Champion geared reverse and painted to match the original bike all for $14,800. If you figure what you are going to lose to the dealer on a trade-in, I would guess that you could have yours converted and come out ahead. We haven't had a bit of trouble with our conversion and it probably has 15K miles on the conversion by now. We have had none of the leaking trunk problems or anything else with our conversion.
