Default Oil changes and Dealerships

hey guys, Im very new to the Harley game, I used to have Jap bikes and know nothing about Harleys.

I took my Street 750 for its upcoming service maintenance. They wanted $300 for this service, I have done the 1 thousand mile maintenance @ $159, and now they claim its 300
for changing Motor oil, trans oil and the primer since somehow they all work in uni-cent and share the motor oil. this sounds and seemed odd for 5 thousand miles on the bike.

they also explained the tedious amount of work they do for the two hours it takes to do all of this, which includes adjusting clutch cables, brake cables, checking air filters and etc.
Do you all think the dealer is justified charging 300 dollars for basic maintenance? I've never paid that much on a Jap bike. someone teach me the harley davidson ways. Also, what
oil do I buy for this particular motorcycle.

thanks!

There is one drain for the motor oil and an oil filter. That's it. It's as simple as most other motorcycles. Did the dealer really say they had to adjust the brake "cables"??? Sounds like you need to either invest in a copy of a factory service manual and start doing your own maintenance......or find another dealer for service.

That manual will pay for itself and then some the first time you touch your ride with a wrench.

98000 on my 07, only time the dealer touched was for warranty work or something I absolutely couldn’t do myself. I have a very good choice of independent shops as well.

The Street can not be easier. 1 plug to pull drain fill you done no primary no trans all in one and done. Use what ever oil you wish. Need to pull radiator guard off to get to filter, easy to do.
I run Mobile 1 in mine and it works just fine, but so would any one of 50 other brands.

well I've had it a whole month now and this bike about two weeks longer

service manuals are invaluable. If you're a registered HD user you can print the service schedule and Owners Manual for your VIN, look at wiring diagrams, etc.

there are tons of reasons to let the dealer do your oil change, if they are actually going to do what they say they are doing. If they see something, smell something, feel something that I wouldn't know to look for then that is a bonus.

By and large though, it's just an oil change and a visual inspection for these x,xxx mile services
