Even in central Iowa, I have been able to ride the bike through the winter rather than store it. If the roads are clear and the thermometer is at least a couple ticks above freezing, I'll be on two wheels.
The 2017 season was my first year of riding. It went from when I picked up the bike the second week of February through the beginning of my vacation on December 22. The rest of the winter it was on the road at least a couple of times each month. At that time I had a nice, paved and insulated garage that got some heat from the rest of the building.
This year is getting a little colder a little earlier and I've moved to an apartment with not quite as nice a garage. I've decided to send the Street south for the winter. My nephew in Austin, TX will be using it as his first bike. The Sportster is going to stay in the primitive garage. If I want to ride it I may preheat it by tossing a blanket over it to keep in the heat of a shop light on the floor beneath it.

Having a motorcycle with a tank of gasoline in the living room is not the best idea. Additionally, keeping an eye on your little guy all the time he is around the bike could get old, lots of parts he could get his fingers into and hurt himself. Good decision on moving it. Ride on !

Due in part to the brake recall and in part to my nephew not getting off his duff to get his license, it looks like the Street is hibernating next to the Sportster in the garage this winter. Both bikes have indeed been hibernating because unlike the last two winters we aren't getting any breaks in the weather. It's either two cold to ride or there is too much slop on the roads.
