Default Starter relay clicking, but starter not engaging

2003 Ultra Classic. When I hit the ignition the relay is clicking, but the starter is not engaging. I have a manual push button on the starter. When I use that, the starter does not want to disengage when I release it.

Sounds very much like a low or bad battery - Charge the battery fully and try again

Check all your ground wires battery connections etc

Was it working before ? I mean has it been sitting a while and this is a new problem

Just checking are you using a meter to check battery voltage

Do the simple stuff first, make sure the battery is fully charged and then have it load tested.

Clean all electrical connections, the small ones on the relay and solenoid, and the battery cable connections.

I was having intermittent problems with it. Then it would not engage at all. Replaced starter and bench tested relay. All connections are brand new. Battery is almost new. Used voltage meter to ensure battery is charged.

A fully charged battery will show approx 13.5 volts on a meter - if you have three hands you can try this - with the meter on the battery reading full voltage try the start button how low does the voltage go ?

A load test is really required just to take the battery out of the equation
