Default Help! New to HD, want to increase MPG.

Hey guys,

I bought my first bike which is a HD Nightster 1200, i love it, loud and fast however it pays the price for fuel.

I noticed my fuel light comes on at 80 miles, i do 40 a day, which means I have to top up every 2 days.

About the bike:- has a micro tuner motosport, short staggered shot pipes, and a round air filter ( has the plastic window on front so you can see valve open and close). So the bike has a tuned map and the stock map.

I want to increase the MPG so if I switch the stock map this would make it too lean and damage the motor I believe? I also dialld
Down the LOW MID on the tuner but ended up being too low where my bike kept cutting out in idle, so I put them back up!

So my biggest question is, what can I do to increase MPG, i dont ride crazy too, sticking to 45mph in 5th half time.

I do apologise if I come across stupid, im new to the scene and I would hugely appreciate any guidance right now since I dont know what to do.

thank you

How many miles do you actually get out of a tank of fuel. How many gallons does it take when you fill up?

I haven't dared to go beyond the light I fear of walking the bike, it' a 3.3 gal tank

you would get better fuel mileage and performance in general from a better set of pipes and a custom tune. feel free to come by my shop and we can talk about it in detail if you'd like. www.rocketridecycles.com......with the custom tune, done on the dyno you can have your tune optimzed for both riding situations and be very happy.

If you don’t ride or start it a tank should last years
But seriously, when it hits 80 miles and the light comes on, how much gas does it take to fill up?
Then calculate your MPG.
Reason being the gas gauge is not that accurate.

I will check it when the light comes on again, i never really took into account how much gallons it took to refill it again. Good point thanks!

Yeah I'm guessing the light may come on alot sooner than I think.

I would go back to stock but be too expensive, might as well keep paying for the fuel. I more bothered about filling it up after every 2 days :/

My bike only gets 30 MPG. So if I had your tank (3.3 gallons) I'd have to fill it every 80 miles to leave me 19 miles to find a station. I don't have a gauge so I'm a milage counter and fill every 120-140 miles, leaving me 16-36 +/- miles to find a station with a 5.2 gallon tank.

Sounds about right, I'd probably need a bigger tank then, can i fit a 4.5 gal tank on a 1200 sportster? 2011?

Those peanut tanks kill me. You're lucky you don't have my Yamaha FZ-10!! The best thing is that the pig (which I love dearly) actually has an "ECO" light to indicate when one is riding in a frugal manner. That thing sucks down fuel MERCILESSLY and you can watch that eco light all you like...while nervously searching for the next gas station!!
