Default ignition advance

Just purchased a `90 FXSTS. Haven`t looked it over too much yet as the polar climate is hindering. I`m seeking knowledge of the ignition system. When starting it reminds me of my `78 FLH with frozen advance weights. It will just start up after a hessitation. Doesn`t turn many revolutions. It will turn over normal if I try it without choke or prime, thereby eliminating battery or connection problems. Looks like a stock ignition module. Is it common for modules to fail like this? I`m guessing the ignition module controls timing for starting. Hope they don`t still use advance weights.

Guess I`ll be checking the VOES and vacuum to it. We might get to normal temps next week. Winter is a long one this year.

Cool Carb'ed bike

With a carb'ed bike ...pump the throttle once (to squirt a little fuel in through the accelerator pump)...then ...while cranking ...crack the throttle open slightly to help pull the fuel in to the cylinder...

if you are talking about the ignition pick up that's in the nose cone ...it's electronic ...and you can slide it forward or backward alittle to advance or retard the ignition a few degree's ...but before trying this ...make sure your battery is fully charged ...with very cold motors...it even harder to turn over ...even a stock motor ...then ...on most softails ...if sitting for a while ...most of the oil will gravity feed down through the oil pump and fill up in the crank cases...making the starting even more difficult...
