Ignition arced

Ignition arced
So I have a 1990 Heritage Softail Springer and I wanted to switch out the ignition with one with keys that A friend gave me. So I'm getting everything I need ready I take the speedometer off and everything is ready to go I set the new ignition on the bracket for the speedometer and I reach down to pop the seat off to unhook the battery. The bike jiggled and the new ignition rolls down somehow touches the ignition hooked up to my motorcycle and a huge spark arced. So I go down to hurry up and unhook the battery after I knocked off the new ignition and my negative terminal on my battery had started to melt and drip down on the plastic. I had another battery so I put it in and I had nothing, no lights no ignition but heat started to generate on my negative terminal so I unhooked it immediately. So I'm wondering is there some sort of fuse that protects important parts or is it possible that I fried important things. Do I need to take this thing to a professional? Any advice would be welcomed and I thank you all in advance. Please forgive my inexperience on this forum.

I have attached the wiring diagram for your bike to help you trace the different circuits. From your description you may have compromised both battery cables so start there and check them from end to end. You can also go through each of your circuit breakers to see if they have been damaged?
