Hello,
I have a 1998 Ultra classic electra glide with a charging problem. Bike volt meter started go to 10 then 8 volts and shut of. So I replaced the 5yr old battery to start out fresh. After fully charging battery I used my multi meter and battery read 12.7V. Started the bike and checked battery and there was no charging happening. So I pulled the plug on the stater and at an idol I had 20volts and as the reved the bike higher it went up to 40. So I assumed it was a bad regulator. I cleaned all the connections and replaced the regulator. Started the bike and had the same result. No charging. Any suggestions?

follow the 12 volt positve line off the regulator till you get to the battery, the older bikes used to have an auto-reset circuit breaker in that wire as it gets closer to the battery. if it has failed or there is an open in the wire, no voltage gets back to the battery.
