Default Snap/Crackle/Pop

Hello, I bought a 03 Road King from the original owner. He told me it has a full stage 1, has Reinhart true duels, screaming eagle air filter and said Harley installed a tune. He mentioned he liked the snap and pop, I do not. It only snaps and pops off throttle (back pressure) when you let off or downshift. It will occasionally cough off idle on take off. What do I need to do to fix it. I believe this is a lean condition? I am wondering if he ever had Harley tune it seeing how he liked the snapping sound. Thank you in advance

Probably was not tuned by the dealer, instead back in 2003 they would do a stage one download to the ECM which was set for slip-ons and a aircleaner change.

True duals were never part of any stage one download so that along with possible leaks at the exhaust gasket or pipe joins might be the problem.

Quick easy way is to get it tuned but being a 03 model it does not have O2 sensors so probably best finding a Dynotune operator that can do a Power Vision License only tune or a Power Commander tune depending on what you are going to do to the bike.

Thanks Scotty3,

I won't be doing any more performance mods to her, love it the way it is. I have seen online there are couple of websites that you can tell them what you have and they will send you a power commander with tune loaded. But you think it is best to find a shop that can put it on a dyno tuner?

thanks again....

Dyno tune is more preferable but a pre loaded map on a Power Commander or Power Vision is better than nothing at all.

Before you do anything with tuning the bike, make sure you have no intake or exhaust leaks. Besides making it very difficult to tune with a mechanical issue, something like that could be causing some or most of your problem.

What is the best way to test for intake or exhaust leaks? Other than the occasional cough off idle and the snap/crackle it runs great and has plenty of power.

thank you
