Engine Ping - What is It?

Engine Ping - What is It?
My bike makes a high pitched squeal during hard acceleration. I can control the sound with the throttle. I thought it was the belt or something. A harley tech test drove the bike and said it was engine detonation and that the bike needs to be tuned. Is that the sound people are refering to when the mention "engine ping"?
If it is ping mine has been doing it for about 2,000 miles. Will it damage the motor?

Personally.........Id love to hear a good, detailed description of "pinging"...mine sounds like it "clatters" sometimes.......but it has since Ive owned it and its been driven by a couple of techs who were really impressed with the way it ran. No mention from either of them about pinging.....
