how to test a crank position sensor

I hope you still monitor hdforums and this thread. I have a 2009 Low Rider and it is bogging down/stuttering sort-of, backfiring bad, seems to do it whenever I try to throttle up a bit, twisting it about 1/2 inch turn just to speed up a little or going uphill whether a slight or drastic grade increase. It gets better but not right by twisting the throttle most or all the way. Forgive me if my questions sound stupid but when you say "unplug the ckp from the emc, put multimeter on the 2 wires," do you mean the 2 wires attached to the ckp? Is it picking up VA/C by cranking the engine? OR did you mean attach the multimeter to the wires that are not part of the ckp but coming from the wiring harness? Sorry but I've been reading so much stuff trying to diagnose this because I can't afford to take it to the shop, my head is about to explode from technical gobbledeegook. 40 years ago I knew a bit about automotive lectric that would help but that sh*t is gone from my brain now.
Thanks in advance if you have any helpful info. I don't know what to check next and I'm still trying to teach myself how to use the multimeter because I know that will help. I guess I need "idiot Instructions" telling me step-by-step how to test the electrical components with the meter.

Reviving this old thread again. I have a 2003 Heritage I'm trying to get back running. I disconnected the ECM connector and probed the terminals for the crank position sensor. Cranked the engine and the voltage varied from 3.5 to 4.2V AC. I've read so many on here saying it should be over 5V. Is this correct? I'm just about to order a new one, I just don't want to waste money if the one I have is good.
