2001 Road King Classic - How do I pull codes?
I just bought a 2001 Road King Classic. I've only ridden it a few times, but after it's warmed up, the engine runs very rough when slowing down, and when at Idle. At times, I can also smell a heavy fuel odor, like the bike is running too rich
I've heard the engine temp sensor is a semi common problem with these... I honestly probably WON'T do the repairs myself, but since I'm in the automotive repair business, I want to see if I can pull the codes myself...
There has to be a way to see what codes are in the ECM... right?

2001 has the Magnetti Marelli injection system not the later Delphi system.
Before you test for codes, clean the throttle body. At the top of each throat is a small hole. Those are the Idle Air Bleeds. If they get dirty the proper amount of air will not be metered at idle. Put the straw of the brake cleaner or carb cleaner into the holes and clean them good as well as the entire throat and throttle plate. Protect the motor finish with rags. The idle is controlled by a stepper motor that cracks the throttle for start up. Once warm the motor backs off and the hot idle stop screw controls the idle speed and air passes through those holes to maintain idle.
Codes are retrieved by turning the ignition switch on for three seconds and then off. Do this twice. Then turn the switch on for eight seconds and the check engine light will flash a number of times and you have to count the flashes and look up that number in a code chart. Now you are really confused.
By the service manual.
By the way the head temp switch is located at the rear of the front head on the left side. Pull the boot back, use a 3/4" socket and remove and replace.
