Default 2000 Fatboy Electrical Problem

I seem to be having my fair share of electrical problems all of a sudden. I also have a 2000 Fatboy that has run great for years. Just recently it has been loosing all electrical power as I'm crusin down the road. The speedometer, lights and gas gauge start blinking and acting erratic then it just dies and there is no power. I have taken it to Harley and they can not find anything wrong with it, never the less it keeps happening. I pull over on the side of the road and turn it off for a minute or so and it starts up again. Sometimes I can go a block and it quits again or sometimes it will go miles and get me home. (It has only happend twice, but it makes me nervous not to mention dangerous) The battery is original and I'm sure it is just a part that needs replacing, but which one? Any suggestions as to where I should start to conserve on money?

Thanks for your help.

I had a similar problem with my 99 Heritage, which at the time had around 10k or so on it. My lights would cut out and the engine would die. I would always manage to get home at about 20 to 30 mph though, anything over that and it seemed to get worse. The shop here checked the charging system and anounced that they didnt know what it was and to of course bring it in to the shop.

I tracked mine down to the 30 amp breaker that is on the front side of the rear fender. I also replaced the battery at the time but I think it was the breaker tripping and resetting all the time that was cutting off all electrical power. Its a cheap try anyway.

If your lights AND engine cut out, usually suspect the main breaker is bad. You can always bypass the main breaker to check it out. If you use a test light when it is in the open position, you will test +12 on only one side as opposed to both. When they open it turns off the power to the bike, when it cools off , the power is restored again.

I replaced the main breaker and the battery and so far it seems to be working well. Don't know if it's my imagination, but it seems to idle better also. Thanks for the input, the main breaker cost me $7.00 and I'm sure I saved $140.00 in diagonostic fees from the HD dealership.

I've got a similar issue with my 94 Heritage. I believe the my problem might be is related to the ignition switch.
I understand the rear of the switch can pull away causing a poor connection. Next time it happens fool with the switch and see if they come back on.
A new switch runs from $17 after market to $60 from HD.

Good luck..
