Recall on 07 Harley-Davidsons

Just checked my VIN number for my 07 FLTR under Service and Maintenance on the Harley Website and have a recall called a "0903: TORQUE SMOOTHING CALIBRATION". Says bring my bike to the dealer ASAP.

Dealer doesn't know anything about it yet.

Anybody know what it is about?

Edit #1: Just found a little more info in Forum "Touring Models" under "Possible 07 recall".

Edit #2 See actual H-D recall notice posted by Pittguy in the above forum

Edit #3 (Thanks to Pittguy) Here's a link to the actual H-D Recall Bulletin:

I have an 07 FXSTC Softail Custom that had the 1000 mile service done on Oct 31. One of the items listed on the service invoice was 'Installed Updated Download' although no reference number was listed. I called the service dept today and I was assured that that download was this one. The bike did run smoother after the service, however other things could be involved. I know that the transmission oil is a heavier grade than before the service, for example. Do I believe the dealer? ???.

Hey Frisco,

Since none of the dealers seem to know about this recall (see Forum "Touring Models' then under "Possible 07 recall"), my guess is that was dealer bullchit. Maybe I'm just a pessimist.

My 07FLTR is at the dealer, for the winter, having some upgrades done. They didn't know anything about the recall when I called this morning. The service manager even said that they probably couldn't do it yet because they didn't get any parts for a recall!!! This is before we are finding out it's some kind of a ECM download.

Honestly though, my dealer has really has been great to deal with.

BTW.....My Bike is AWESOME, runs great, no surging, no clanky tranny. Just a little whine and 5th and it does got HOT.

Here's the exact verbage from the Harley Service website:

ATTENTION:

There are one or more open safety recalls or product improvement campaigns on your vehicle. The following list contains the campaign number and a brief description:

0903: TORQUE SMOOTHING CALIBRATION

We strongly urge you to take your motorcycle to your dealer to have the appropriate service performed as soon as possible. Should you choose to ride your motorcycle prior to this service, we urge you to be aware of this condition. Please see your local Harley-Davidson dealer for further details.

Note the legaleze. It's a "Product Improvement Campaign", not a recall. Lawyers!

The bulletin regarding the recall wasn't released until about 4 days ago. I would question whether your dealer had earlier knowledge. That being said, some dealers have been installing the 103" remap on
96" bikes to solve the heat/pinging issue. Maybe this is the same map used in the recall.
Also, in your case, (just guessing here) they may have installed the heat management program that only
addresses overheating at idle.

The 103 map in a 96incher would NEVER be allowed by MoCo,your dealer may do that to get you out of his hair. This new download is still EPA compliant.

RE: Recall on 07 Harley-Davidsons

When I picked up the bike and saw the download reference on the invoice I specifically asked if it was the 'parade download'. When I brought the bike in I stated that it was very hot at idle. The service manager fetched the tech who did the work and he said that he checked for updates and that there was one and he loaded it. It was not the hot idle program. That one has to be specifically asked for and it will be installed once and removed once at no charge. This one, he said, was a 'maintenace download'. He did not know what it addressed, but he said that updates are distributed routinely from the factory and if they apply to your bike, they load them.
Even after this I still experienced the 'my right leg is on fire' syndrome, due to the heat from the exhaust pipes.
After careful consideration whether 'voiding the warranty' or having a bike that works, is more important, I ordered a Power Commander III usb.
New Discussion.

Never said my dealer does it. Just said others have reported it being done. It may or not be the same as
the 103 map.
The new download will still be very lean, imho.

RE: Recall on 07 Harley-Davidsons

Since a Harley does not have a Mass Air Flow sensor, the EFI has to calculate air entering motor and cubic inches plays a big role in that fomula. There are no stock 103 downloads and it highly unlikely a 103 Stage I would even work as motor would be recieving at least 10% more fuel which would be excessivly rich.

A "103 download" sounds cool...could be something the dealer said to please a customer.
