Default Bad starter clutch....?

The bike is a 2000 Fatboy. When hitting the starter switch the pinion gear engages the starter ring on the clutch hub and trys to spin the hub.

When I let-off the starter switch, the pinion gear stays engage and I have to 'tap' it to return to the 'rest' position.

Could this be a starter clutch issue? Any help or direction is appreciated.

Sounds more like a gummed up engagement or solinoid shaft. A starter clutch will grind and not engage. I could be wrong though.

I agree with soft02, doesn't sound like a starter clutch issue to me, unless its not allowing the jackshaft to move freely. Solenoid could be giving you problems too, but check out the mechanical function of the components that slide back and forth.

My starter clutch has just packed up. It just whirrs at high speed, making a pretty unpleasant noise, with no motion from the engine. I'm about to dive in there to see what to do about it!
