Please Help me identify this relay.. It's the only one that works.

Hey all, I have an issue going on with my 87 FLSTC..
The starter relay also controls the brake/running light. I have tried all the ones that the dealership says will work, but no brake light or tail light. The only one I have here that worked has no part number on it, but i did do a small diagram of what is on it. Can anyone please ID this relay for me so I can get a replacement? Thanks! Your diagram is hard to read. It looks like a three way. The square box with line could mean normally closed when not energized. Then when you start ignition it switches the power to the starter & removes power to lights, makes sense. Once started the relay returns to supply power for lights.
My best guess. Your HD dealer doesn't have this? |
You can test this relay using a meter. Looks like five wires going to five posts. Two posts are your ignition switch energizing the coil. The three other posts are:
One common (common should be 12vdc positive on all the time) then switching between other two posts when starting One supply to starter when energized 12vdc positive One supply to lights 12vdc positive. Off during start up |

You have cross posted this issue all over the forum. Pick a section, hell any section...
The starter relay has nothing to do with the tail light or the brake light, unless you have a botched up mess of a wiring harness. I explained this in response to your post in the electrical section. |

Go to Napa and ask them to get their relay book or see if they will match the pin config with one they have. All relays I have ever got there have the diagram on it or at least the #'s for each pin which will let you find a match. You could also go online and search standard motor products site or wells mfg and search their relays

The starter relay has nothing to do with the tail light or brake light. The OP is chasing his tail, it is not a relay problem. |

This is not the relay im talking about.. the 2- 87 pins are solid, not broken.
Two terminals control the coil (low amperage) the other two terminals handle the higher current. The two 87-87a are for a normally open or normally closed configuration, your option. |
