Default RIP Larry Faccio

Published on Wednesday, April 30, 2008
SIERRA VISTA — A Fort Huachuca firefighter died Sunday as the result of a motorcycle crash Saturday in Mohave County.

Fort Huachuca Fire Department Lt. Larry Duane Faccio, 48, served as a Fort Huachuca firefighter since 1995, according to a Fort Huachuca public affairs official. At the time of his death, he was riding with firefighter friends from several firefighting agencies of Cochise County. They were participating in the final days of the Laughlin River Run.[/align]

Mattice was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, Patricia Smith, 51, also of Lake Havasu City, was flown to Sunrise Medical Center in Las Vegas with a possible broken hand, hip and leg, where she remained Monday morning in serious condition, Carter said.

Initial reports indicated that Mattice was not wearing a helmet. There was no word on whether Faccio or Mattice’s passenger were wearing helmets.

Faccio, of Hereford, was flown to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he died Sunday afternoon, she said.

“In a sense it was almost a head-on collision,” Carter said. The crash is still under investigation. The cause of the wreck was the crossing of the center line, and it remains unknown why that happened, she said.

Faccio was riding with the Bisbee chapter of the Riders of Fire Motorcycle Club, of which he was a member and road captain.

Las Vegas police said 60,000 to 65,000 motorcycle enthusiasts attended the 26th annual Laughlin River Run motorcycle rally. It is billed as one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the nation.

Police have imposed vehicle checkpoints and closely monitored the rally since three people were killed and more than a dozen were injured in a 2002 brawl and shoot-out between Hells Angels and rival Mongols motorcycle gang members at the Harrah’s Laughlin casino.
