I bought my first harley yesterday. A 1975 harley ironhead sportster 1000, electric start. As Im cycling throught the gears the shifter spline broke clean off. what kinda labor time and work am I looking at doing. first harley, new to working on them or any motorcycle for that, and wondering If its something I should let an expert tackle or could I do by myself and save some money. any help is very much appreciated.
Basically its not a hard job if you can understand the procedure.everything in the primary comes off, 4 trans door bolts.most of the tools you can make.
rear exaust, sprocket cover, sprocket and chain, grease seal. dead blow hammer on the sprocket shaft and the trans pops free.
what is a dead blow hammer. just hit after all that? what is the labor for a project like this. what would you recommend? not oppose to doing it by myself. does all the trans components neeed to come out?
A dead blow hammer is like its filled with lead shot vs a steel head hammer. Let me get a pic of the trans as it comes out intact. Do you have the manual?
