liked the way it looked, hauled it home (kick & electric): i push the clutch basket on shaft and it rubs on kickstart nut (nut shows the same thing has occurred on past repair/rebuilds). basket seems to be in really good shape, not warped etc. Bearings (2) were replaced, no probs there. The starter ratchet gear spacer should make contact w/the basket bearings washer if i remember right but it doesn't. The start gear spacer for a '71 is longer, thought about trying that. Anybody ever run into a similar problem ?

 

does the kickstart shaft have all it`s parts,

 

starter not disassembled but kicks over, parts that can be seen in primary side look properly positioned and no play noticed. The only thing of interest is the nut which I ASSUME is the right one but in trying to remember from the past (worked for an H-D dealer for a couple of years in mid 70's), I don't remember the nut having a raised shoulder around the shaft bore. Waiting on a socket , I'm gonna take the nut off and check a little closer.

 

if #21 is missing you can pull the shaft too far into the primary tightening the nut
