Default Transmission on a 78

hey guys I have a question will the transmission off of an 82 sportster work on a 78? My last post I was saying I had transmission problems turns out that I shattered the 3rd gear on the main shaft and damaged a few others. There's a guy on the cell of transmission from a 82 sportster and I didn't know if it would work. I'm hoping up and give me some good news appreciate the help. 78 1000 4 speed

I am not expert on this but i do expect that all Sportster transmissions from 1977 up to around 1990 or so, when they changed to 5 speed, are identical. See what others here may say.

yes and no - you will need to set the end plays and the shift fork distances after the end plays are set to ensure the set up is correct when shifting

the factory book has the info on what to do just make sure the countershaft and main shaft end plays are correct before doing the shifting forks

Default 78 trans

could I use the gears from the new one on my trans? Also this would be the perfect time to install a kicker that I really would love to have is adding that a hard process

all your damaged gears will swap out -- YES

your block may or may not as a 78 have the hole and reinforced boss necessary for the kicker -- picture is needed inside the lower back of the primary area the clutch hub hides when on
