what is different in the 79 ironhead sportster than 78
#2
The frames of IronHeads were virtually unchanged from 1957 to 1978 inclusive. There was one major change from the original short frame to the long frame starting with the first electric start in 1968, and some minor changes along the way.
1979 has an entirely redesigned frame based on the Cafe Racer design that started around 1977.
Many parts are still the same - engine etc, but newly designed seat, fuel tank, oil tank, fenders, brakes and brake support systems for rear disk and for dual front disks, electronic ignition, carb, exhaust pipes, foot pegs and supports, ..., and more.
1979 to 1981 have many common parts. In 1982 the process of redesigning for the Evo which came in 1986 was begun. So 1982 to 1985 is another design group with some parts common the the 1986-on Evo Sportsters.
There are websites that you can visit that detail the precise changes that occur year to year, for all years. Some Google searches should turn them up
