My '83 came stock with a spin-on oil filter, and I added a Lockhart oil cooler about 20 years ago. Have had no problems with it, and the old bike seems to like it during the summers here in Alabama. I have a cover for it for winter to largely eliminate its effect when the extra cooling isn't needed.

A clear picture of the left front of the bike might help with ideas. I would consider using strapping [or whatever] to attach the oil filter mount to the left front frame down tube. Or to any place on the bike where a section of frame is exposed. Easier to decide when you have the actual parts in hand.

I have a paughco hardtail frame. Theres two struts that cross the frame in the front. One about four inches from the bottom of the frame, and one about even with the rocker boxes. Since I have moved my distributor to the horn mount i was going to mount it on the high strut, and the oil cooler low.
I'd post picture but Irma did a number on my yard, gotta clear all the brush out first.
Actually look at the bike in my sig, where the air horn is where i was going to mount the cooler.

On my 1978 I mounted the cooler with the engine guard, at the top of the front frame down tubes, horizontally. On my sig pic it looks like a black blob.
See 83XLX's sig pic for an alternative, vertically on the left down tube.
Any location will do. In a good air flow is better. As long as you can run the hoses to it.

I will mostly mount it like you have your, Mick.
Its a topic for another thread but Im still debating on getting an engine guard. Im not syre the setup i have will accommodate one or if i"ll have to fabricate one, and im also not sure if it will look good on a chopper.

The bottom of the engine guard mounts onto the bottom engine mount plates so that part should be OK. The top mounts to the same bolt holes as the oil cooler when it is installed horizontal like mine. You could possibly weld on a plate for that between the down tubes.
I found my engine guard on eBay, OEM. had a few scratches etc. You can get new reproduction from J&P Cycles etc - at least you used to be able to get them.
An engine guard might be foreign to the chopper concept of stripped down etc?
