Default Original Ironhead I'm thinking of buying

A 100% all original 1985 ironhead with less than 500 miles is available to me. The reason for the low mileage is kind of a long story, but basically is due to a death in the family. It starts and drives. The owner changed fluids, new battery, etc. it will need tires (they're original), a rusty chain will need replacing, and some other stuff for sure. This bike has original paint in almost perfect condition. Asking price is $2500. I had a 1978 XLCH in the early 80s, but have had all Big Twins since 1982. Should I pull the trigger on this? Whaddaya think?

Sounds like a deal. Keep in mind that the alternator in those bikes had problems with wear in the clutch shaft bearing, which results in the magnets coming loose from the basket. With only 500 miles, that won't be a problem now, but could have to be addressed somewhere down the line.

If an IronHead Sportster [the look, sound, feel, tradition] is what you want then go for it. Will this be your only bike? or are you keeping one or more Big Twins? If you are used to Big Twins, especially modern ones, then will you be content with this bike?

$2500, you can't get hurt. Get it home, change all fluids and go for a ride. If it is as original as you state, I would keep the "original" tires, some AMCA guy will want them one day.

You might even be able to buff her out and flip it for a profit, again with only 500 miles on the clock. She will be eligible for AMCA judging etc in only a couple of more years. Good luck and we want pics.

GO FOR IT! Ya get to relive the feeling of riding a real Harley. Worse case scenario, ya don't really like it. Sell it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. My 1977 XLH 1000 is not a daily rider, my 2007 Dyna with 95,000 miles is. My Ironhead was a gift from my Wife as a Retirement Project Bike. After all these 51 years of riding . . . the THRILL IS STILL THERE.
