1970 xlch Tire recommendations
Good Day all,
I have an realitively unmolested 1970 XLCH. It has a chrome aftermarket rear wheel, but the front is an original aluminum. It currently has Avon Roadrunners on it (came w/ the bike when I purchased it). I am not sure the Roadrunner is the proper tire for the original rim.
I like to explore this area on the bike. I live in NM, and the roads out here sometimes turn to dirt if you get out away from the larger cities. These Roadrunners don't do well in the sand and gravel.
I was considering putting a "flat track" type of tires on the bike, but I understand there is a special "bead" needed on the original rims.
Any recommendations? 18" rear and 19" front. I don't really want to put the cash out for new rims at this point.
I do short trips of 100 to 200 miles. I know this is not a Cruiser, so with the flat track type of tire on this bike, the "ride" does not concern me.
Thanks, Steve

I have used Shinko SR712 tires on my Ironhead for 10+ years. I get good mileage. They do great in the rain. I can put both tires on for 100 bucks.

I have a restored 73 XLCH and when it came time for tires I also bought Avon Road Runners. Now the front fender will not fit over the front tire. It seems the profile of the front tire is too wide for the original fender. The fender mounting brackets rub the sidewalls. Everything is original on the bike. Forks etc. Does the 73 Sportster take a thinner profile tire? Thanks.
