Default 1958 dry clutch

Hey guys im new, and dont know how to use this site very well. Here we go. I have a 1958 900cc iron sportster with a 4 speed dry clutch. I am now putting the clutch plates back in and am wondering how many and why there are 2 steel plates to go in first. The first plate in looks a bit different, but still it will go steel, steel, friction, steel, friction and so on. Is this correct, if it is there will be a total of 15 plates. Thanks. Brad in Tavistock

The first plate to go in is a steel plate.
This plate is called the 'backing plate.'

The second plate to go in is a steel plate. This is called a 'driven plate.'

The third plate to go in is a fiber faced plate. This plate is called a 'friction drive plate.'

The following plate is another steel (driven) plate. This pattern alternates until all the plates are installed.
The last plate to go in will be a friction drive plate.

There are a total of 7 steel driven plates and 7 friction drive plates, along with the single steel backing plate, which makes a total of 15 plates.

After all the plates are installed, you then put the clutch release plate with the 6 holes for the spring cup retainers in place and insert the cups and springs, followed by the nuts.
I can post a pic of the clutch parts if you need one.

You know i am in London. One of my other hobbies is hiking. From time to time we hike the Avon Trail, and i pass thru Tavi on the way to some of the hikes. It may be too cold to ride up your way now, but we could get together in the Spring - compare bikes, tell lies, etc.
