On the other hand, in the pinion gear and shaft assembly in the electric starter system, the shaft and the corresponding nut have a left hand thread. See page 4-22 of 99484-78 and 5-7 of 99484-85.

Thank you for the opportunity to once again clear up this misconception.
Wait a min...I can't find where the original post mentions the bike being worked on and you just gave definitive advice that could cause serious damage. My 1982 FXRS clutch hub nut is reverse thread as well as the main drive gear sprocket nut. Idk if this is a sporty forum or whatever, I came here from a google search page about how to remove clutch hub nut so while maybe for sportsters they're all right hand threads that's not the case for big twin 5 speeds. I hope this clears something up because if I didn't know better and followed your advice there could've been some serious damage.

Yeah, this is a sporty forum. It says so at the top. Don't follow internet advice unless you know the source and context.

Yes, this is not just any Sportster forum, but in particular it is an IronHead Sportster [1957 to 1985] forum.

Thank you though for posting. Now, after all these years I know from where this misconception originates. It has always been a mystery for me
